New Year’s Resolutions (for your hair!)

Want a healthier relationship with your hair, but aren’t sure where to start? You’re in luck – our stylists have written your New Year’s Resolutions for you! Follow these five simple guidelines for healthier, stronger (and more beautiful!) hair:

1) Deep Condition.  Your hair needs hydration on a regular basis. Aim for twice a month (or more, if you have drier hair). In-salon, try our Emergency or Ultimate Treatments. At home, use a deep-conditioning masque such as L’ANZA’s Keratin Healing Oil Intensive Hair Masque. Winter heat and summer sun will dry our your hair, and these treatments deeply penetrate the hair to deliver hydration and healing.

2) Maintain Your Cut. Split ends just aren’t attractive, and the longer you let them go, the likelier it is that your healthy hair will become compromised. The neglected ends will eventually split all the way up the strand, making your hair brittle and unmanageable.

3) Protect Your Hair From Heat.  On driers, curlers, and straighteners, use low-temp settings, especially if you use these tools every day. Even more importantly, always use a thermal protectant before using heat-styling tools! L’ANZA’s Magic Bullet is a leave-in conditioning spray that detangles and color-protects while simultaneously protecting your hair from heat.

4) Use the Right Shampoo for Your Hair. When you switch from a basic drug store shampoo to a product that is engineered specifically for your hair type, the difference can be dramatic. Curls and color-treated hair, in particular, need specially formulated products (like Surface Curls or L’ANZA’s Healing Color Care). There are also shampoos to thicken, hydrate, and strengthen your hair. Identify your hair’s issues and then find the shampoo and conditioner to remedy them!

5) Finally, Visit an Esthetician.  After all, you don’t want to forget about the hair on the rest of your body! Keep your eyebrows shapely and eliminate stray or unwanted hair from just about anywhere by visiting our experienced estheticians.

Here’s to a 2016 full of fantastic hair care!

Perfect Holiday Eyes

If you’ve always wanted to do a smoky eye but are afraid you’ll end up looking bruised instead of beautiful, then you’ll be happy to hear about our Perfect Eye Event on Thursday, December 10th from 5 pm – 7:30 pm. A professional makeup artist from Glo Minerals will be in-house, working in tandem with our stylists to offer eye makeup tutorials (including brow shading) and to answer all of your how-to questions about eye makeup. To make this a truly festive evening, attendees will receive a complimentary gift, plus mimosas and special pricing on makeup! We hope you’ll call soon to make a reservation!

Here’s a little sneak peek of our Perfect Eye Event: First, you’ll find stocking stuffers and holiday gifts galore! Need a little something for your best friend, sister, mother, or (ahem) you? One of our favorite items is this little Dual Essence Clutch by Glo Minerals:

Not only is is beautiful all by itself, this luxe little pouch also contains the Elemental Eye Collection, a mini Creme Bronze (in warmth), and two lip crayons (in chiffon and crimson). This kit has everything you need for everyday makeup or a great party look.

Our stylists suggest a smoky eye with a nude lip (try the chiffon from the Dual Essence Clutch). Start with a light-colored, neutral base on the lid. Then, add a highlighter (something with a light shimmer) just below the brow. Add a darker shade to the outer corner of your eye, carefully blending with the base color. Finish off with a dark eyeliner (try a cat eye, for a dramatic effect) and mascara.

Or, if it’s your lips you want to accentuate, try a more natural eye (a downplayed version of the smoky look) with a bold pop of crimson color on the lip.

Either of these looks will pair beautifully with your little black dress!

We can’t wait to see you at our Perfect Eye Event!

Happy Holidays from the 140 crew!

A Few Products We’re Thankful For

products we

Is the area around your bathroom mirror beginning to resemble a fully stocked cosmetics counter? Are you having trouble finding your toothbrush among the bottles of leave-in conditioners and overnight hair masques? The truth is, most women have more hair products than they know what to do with. Sure, it’s great to have lots of fun options, but we think your hair products should be like your best friends – a few really great ones are all you need. To help you in your search for your hair’s new best buddy, here are a few tried and true recommendations from our stylists.

L’ANZA KERATIN HEALING OIL

We can’t say enough good things about this lightweight, silky oil! The Keratin Protein rebuilds the inner layers of each strand to give your hair more bounce and body. The Phyto IV Complex (a blend of Abyssinian Flower Oil, Coffee Seed Oil, Acai Fruit Oil, and Babassu Kernel Oil – no silicone!) rehydrates without weighing hair down or leaving a greasy residue.

To use, massage a dime-sized amount into damp hair after washing and conditioning. Leave in for five minutes. Rinse. Then, apply a small amount to towel-dried hair before blow-drying. L’ANZA Keratin Healing Oil provides thermal protection and speeds up your blow dry time. Our stylists say you can also use this on dry hair for extra moisture and shine.

Made for all hair types, this hard-working oil moisturizes, strengthens, heat-protects, and nourishes your hair. Definitely a friend for life!

L’ANZA MAGIC BULLET

This is the friend who can do it all. This styling product is truly the ultimate in versatility. It’s a leave-in conditioning spray, but it also works as a detangler and a color-protectant. Magic Bullet offers thermal protection up to 482 degrees and also shields your hair from the sun’s damaging, color fading rays.

To use, just mist it over your damp or dry hair, then style as usual.

Judging by the results we’ve seen, this product is aptly named!

SURFACE MOUSSE: AWAKENING THICKENING MOUSSE AND CURL WHIP MOUSSE

These styling mousses from Surface are the friends who lift you up when you’re feeling down.

Curl Whip Mousse from the Surface Curls line will smooth frizz without drying out your hair (it hydrates with Cocoa Butter and Amaranth). This is a mousse with a soft, light feel that gives your curls a gentle lift. Made for the naturally curly girl.

Awaken Thickening Mousse from the Surface Awaken line will noticeably volumize your hair. Suitable for both curly and straight hair, this product uses organic Amaranth protein to strengthen as it styles. Our stylists say that this lightweight, great-smelling mousse is some of the best they have ever used!

To use Curl Whip Mousse or Thickening Mousse, apply to clean, damp hair at the roots, and then pull through the rest of your hair and style as usual.

Visit the salon soon to introduce your hair to its new best friend. You can thank us later.

Happy Thanksgiving from the 140 Crew!

Tips for Your Bridal Hair

Bridal Hair

It’s the big day. You are about to walk down the isle and everyone is standing, turned to face you; but nightmare begins, your hair has suddenly fallen out, it looks a mess, perhaps like a poodle is sitting on your head. You are freaking out and feel that it is the end of the world and the pictures are already ruined. Oops, too late for help, but for those who are not currently in the process of walking down the aisle, we have a few suggestions;

Plan Ahead

Most importantly, always plan ahead. If you are looking to color, perm, or alter your hair, have it done at least one to two months in advance of the big day. This way, your hair is given a little extra time to soften the style and look natural. In addition, schedule a trial run, whether it is for an up-do or down do. It is important to book this in advance to ensure that you and your stylist are on the same page and you are happy with the end result. Wearing a veil or headpiece, take it to the trial appointment. Haven’t decided on the perfect hair accessory, take several. The stylist will be delighted to make a suggestion based on your desired hairstyle. Who wants to end up with a hairstyle that looses it’s beauty when a gorgeous floral hairpiece covers all the intricate up-do twists? Or better asked, who wants to cover up the gorgeous hairstyle someone just paid for? Plan ahead and you will be delighted.

Shop Around

Don’t be afraid to shop around for other stylists. The stylist you visit each month for beautiful hi-lights may not specialize in the look you are dreaming of. In fact, he or she may not even like doing formal hairstyles and may only oblige because you are such a great client. Don’t be afraid to ask your stylist for recommendations if formal is not his or her specialty. This is your big day, and it is very different from an everyday cut and color.

Stay True to Yourself

The key to a bomb hairstyle for you is to stay true to yourself. Do not go too over the top and out of your comfort zone, it will only leave guests wondering who the girl in the white dress is or who she wishes she were. You certainly will not be the most comfortable person there if you are constantly reconsidering the hairstyle choice, be fun but be true.

Be Product Free on Your Big Day

It is extremely important to have clean, dry hair on your trial day and wedding day. Stay away from applying conditioner too heavily, especially leave-in conditioner. Also, stay away from silkening products to avoid weighing the hair down and making it slippery, thus hard to work with or unable to hold curl. The stylist will use all the products needed for your style.

A Girl Can Always Accessorize

You can never go wrong with accessorizing! Accessories are trending for 2015 weddings, so have fun. It never hurts to add a gorgeous accent to your wedding hair; however, make sure you choose the right accessory to go complete the look you envision. For a classical look, you may want to wear a Swarovski crystal brooch or jeweled barrettes. If your gown has more flow and is playful, consider adding a bird-cage veil, feathers or unstructured fabric flowers to complete the perfect look. Complement the dress but don’t compete with it; and always remember that you are the most beautiful component of the equation.

In the end, if you remember these simple suggestions then there will be less to stress over on your wedding day.
