Glo Makeup Kit

Bright sun, swimming, and sweat are all aspects of summer that wreak havoc on what would otherwise be nothing but fun – your summer makeup look. But with so many cool shades and tones to choose from, summer heat doesn’t have to dull your plans. Here are some tips from our make-up artist Kourtney Whicker to keep you bright and beautiful all summer long:

GloMinerals Primer

1. Go with a lightweight moisturizer that offers SPF protection of at least 15 (you have to protect that skin!). Dermalogica offers several choices for various skin types, including a solar defense booster that can be added to any moisturizer (how cool is that?).

2. Mineral based make-up, such as GloMinerals, is a great choice for the summer. Any form of hydration actually improves the look of mineral makeup. So, it looks better when you sweat? Yep.

3. Avoid cream concealers that will melt in the summer heat. Instead, instead choose a liquid concealer – like the GloMinerals Luxe Liquid Bright Concealer – and set with a light powder.

4. For a fresh, dewy look perfect for summer nights, highlight the high points of the face – cheekbones, sides of the forehead, and the inner corner of each eye. Your face will look brighter and people will wonder where you got your glow!

5. Think neutral color for the eyes. Metallics in neutral tones are very trendy this summer and can add creative expression to your makeup look. Plus, these coppery-gold neutrals will look gorgeous on sun-kissed skin.

6. For go-to summer glow, choose a bronzer that is two shades darker than your skin tone. A warm blush color may be applied over the bronzer for a nice finish.

7. Finish your look with a neutral color lip gloss. Glosses reflect light, making them the perfect choice for summer.

And that’s it! Go on, beautiful! You’re ready to dazzle!

Poolside Braids

A thick, beautiful braid is a timeless look. Famous women the world over have worn braids to show off their hair – from classic royalty like Cleopatra and Anne Boleyn to modern movie star royalty like Blake Lively and Jennifer Lopez. And yet, for all of its glamour and elegance, the braid is one of the easiest hairstyles to pull off, which is why you don’t have to save it just for special occasions. This summer, make the world’s most enduring hairstyle your go-to look.

Even if you can’t do fancy braids like French braids, fishtails, or waterfall braids, a simple down-the-back braid (or two braids starting at your temples and meeting in the back) looks beautiful for a summer afternoon at the pool. And even better, this lovely style is also a practical one. Here’s why:

A braid is the perfect summer accessory. You don’t want to wear your favorite earrings to the seaside because you might lose them, and necklaces make weird tan lines, but a braid keeps hair off of your neck in the heat and makes you look effortlessly cool.

A braid protects your hair. When your strands are folded into a braid, they’re getting less UV exposure, and thus, less sun damage (especially important if you color-treat your hair). Add to this benefit by coating your hair with a conditioning treatment (like L’ANZA’s Trauma Treatment) before braiding, and you’ll protect your hair even further from the sun’s harsh rays, and from chlorine in the pool or salt in the ocean.

A braid is an instant two-day style. Summer days are lazy days, right? So, you don’t want to be spending you time on elaborate hairstyles (especially ones that require heat tools, like blow dryers or curling irons!). Braid your hair one day, keep the style in over night, and voila, the next day you have gorgeous waves – a day-two style with almost no effort!

And whether you’re a braiding newbie or a braiding expert, it’s always nice to have someone do your hair for you. So, on your way to the pool, pop in to the salon and ask for a braided style. We’ll make you look like royalty!

On average, women shave their legs about twelve times per month. That’s a lot of extra shower time every week – especially because (let’s face it) shaving is no one’s favorite beauty routine. Even when you use just the right razor, with just the right shaving cream to match, you still sometimes end up with razor burn or even nicks and cuts (those 99 cent razors get dull more quickly than you realize!).

Try a leg wax at 140 Salon –  20 % off through May 31st!

Waxing your legs might seem like a chore as well, but think about it this way: it’s a chore that someone else will do for you – bonus! Also, when you wax instead of shave, you’re really only worrying about leg hair once or twice a month (instead of twelve times!). So, cutting down on the amount of shaving you do is a definite plus, but are there any other benefits to waxing instead of shaving?

Our estheticians, Taylor and Tiffany, say yes. Because waxing removes hair from the root, you are going to end up with a much smoother look and feel than you can achieve with shaving. Also, the more you wax, the less painful waxing becomes. It may sting a little the first time, but waxing actually shrinks the hair follicle, decreasing your discomfort over time, as long as you are exclusively waxing. Are we saying you can’t shave between waxes? Ideally, yes. To remove with wax, the hair has to be about ¼ inch long, about the length of a grain of rice. This is about a week to two weeks of growth, depending on how fast your hair grows. We admit that this is one of the drawbacks to exclusively waxing as your method of hair removal – feeling a little hairy during the summer months is no fun, even if you have a scheduled wax on the horizon. It’s important to know, though, that when you continue to wax instead of shave, your hair will grow back softer and finer over time, making the need for hair removal less and less frequent.

If you do decide to wax, there are a few things you can do to make the process a little less prickly. About twenty-four hours before your appointment, exfoliate your legs with a loofah-type sponge and a gentle exfoliator (such as a homemade sugar or salt scrub). Also, the day of your appointment be sure that there is no lotion or oil residue on your legs. Immediately after your wax, tea tree oil is a gentle, anti-bacterial remedy for redness or bumps. It’s also a good idea to exfoliate your legs two or three times between waxes, to keep the skin healthy and rejuvenated.

All together, your leg waxing appointment will only take thirty-five to forty minutes (just once a month!), and you’ll walk out of the salon with smooth, soft legs that you can’t wait to show off!

It doesn’t matter if you spend your day in a pencil skirt or a pair of sweat pants – being a mom is always hard work. You’re head honcho to your kids no matter what your title might be – and that means a whole lot of diapers to change, dinners to make, and play dates to plan (and not much time leftover for you).

So if you spend your week (and your weekend) in yoga pants and a disheveled ponytail, we don’t blame you, because we know how hard your job is.  But we’re here to tell you that there might be a better way, for your hair at least!

What you need is a low-maintenance, wash-and-go cut. We call this one the wash-and-go bob. Don’t worry, we promise this isn’t the feathered, helmet-like “mom-bob” you were always afraid you’d end up with. This is an updated look – sexy and tousled and not the least bit boring (also, we think it’ll make you look younger, not older!). This cut works best if your hair is curly and textured, but you can make it work for any hair type. Ask your stylist for a layered bob with piecey bangs (in fact, ask for piecey layering throughout, which creates a look that is lush and natural, but not messy). This bob is slightly stacked in the back to bring up your hair’s volume, and has a touch of asymmetry, with the front layers a bit longer than the back.

To style, simply wash and condition as usual. Then, apply a dime-sized amount of curl cream to your palms  (we love Surface Curls Smoothing Cream) and run fingers through your hair, starting at the roots. For more defined curls, twirl strands around your fingers while you still have product on your hands. Then, gently dry with a diffuser (or don’t!).  This cut also works beautifully when you let it air dry. That’s why it works for moms who hardly have time to brush their teeth in the morning, let alone complete elaborate beauty rituals. Styling this cut shouldn’t take you any longer than it takes you to read this paragraph!

If your hair is straight or has just a little bit of wave, you can still pull off this cut. Ask your stylist for the same type of layered bob. To style, you can use a curling iron to shape a few pieces at the crown of your hair and around your hairline (to add volume and frame the face). Then, pull your fingers through the curls after lightly spritzing with a light hold hairspray. Another trick we love is beach spray – like Surface Swirl Sea Salt Spray or L’ANZA’s Beach Spray – these add wave and texture, creating a fun, windswept look.

And moms, please, please, please never underestimate the power of dry shampoo. This stuff is seriously the best thing that ever happened to busy moms. Our favorites are L’ANZA’s Healing Style Powder-Up Texturizer or Surface Trinity Dry Shampoo.  If you’re having a particularly crazy morning, just spray this stuff on your roots, run hands through your hair, and walk out the door. Dry shampoo adds volume and separation and smells great (so your hair will look shiny and smell freshly washed, even it really, really isn’t). Don’t worry. We won’t tell.

You have enough worries – let us give you a haircut that won’t be one of them!

Thanks, Mom

My mom taught me to let go of the small stuff. Life is too big for worry. If you don’t have the ability to change it, you have the ability to change your attitude about it or remove yourself from it. –Gini S.

Our moms have taught us plenty:

How to wear lipstick so it lasts all day.

How to wake up looking like you just stepped onto a movie set.

How to keep your nails strong and your heart stronger.

How to smile like you mean it, even when you don’t.

How to believe in your own worth, even when you feel unworthy.

How to change a tire and how to change the sheets.

How to make a pot roast and how to fake a homemade pie.

How to say I love you.

How to say sorry.

How to say thank you.

We know we should be thanking our mothers every day. But for the days we forgot to say thank you (or I love you), there’s always Mother’s Day. It never hurts to add a little gift to those kind words while you’re at it. And we know the perfect one: A gift certificate to 140 Salon & Blow Dry Bar and a sweet bouquet of flowers from Ninth Street Florist. If you’re in the Triangle area, simply drop by the salon to pick up a gift card and then swing by Ninth Street Florist to order your flowers – we’re both on Ninth Street! Don’t live in the area? You can also order a gift certificate from the comfort of your own computer – that way you can make mom feel special no matter how far away you live.

Gift cards come in any amount you choose, so mom can get anything from a blowout to a full highlight. And the flowers? Well, everyone loves to get a bouquet of flowers (something else we learned from our mothers).

Happy Mother’s Day, from 140 Salon & Blow Dry Bar!
